Those who manage pension funds for many large companys are stealing a page from those who have big money, they are investing the pension funds into what is called hedge funds. Hedge funds aren't tied to the stock market and can sometimes have bigger returns than the stock market but at the same time they could do worse.

Some worry that its too big a risk to invest what is supposed to be a sure return for duty served to a lot of retirees, it could end up with those same retirees getting nothing.
