ROAD REPAIRS

Sgt Fluffy said...

Oh, and as for gas taxes for road repairs...Wtf are all the other friggin taxes for we pay for? We pay taxes on a crapload of stuff day after day, year after year, but yet they never improve. Look at I65 Its been crappy for years, what about all the state and US roads in Alabama 90-99% crappy. Where are are tax dollars? yeah....road repairs

You're right, the belief the money is going for road repair is a joke. What they need to do and was brought one time during Wallace's last term in office, is to put toll booths at the state lines. It was rejected because it was believed that would deter people from wanting to come through Alabama. But there is a toll bridge over the Coosa, has that stopped people from using it? OR, and this is a huge debate, one that we had in one of my classes in college, start having and enforcing car inspections. My professor said that it will never fly here because there are too many "beaters" out there on the road that would never pass. See, Alabama has to realize that we are part of the US and that other states have these things to raise money for road repair.

Sarge, have you driven the roads of Lousiana? They are the worst roads in the nation. You know why? They don't have property tax on vehicles. You go buy your tags and pay 60 bucks for a 4 year decal.
Most states have both gas tax and vehicle property tax to pay for road improvements. I hear also that the roads in Mississippi are bad as well. Never driven thru Mississippi, so I can substantiate that. These taxes you want to do away with pays for a lot of things about the highways, not just asphalt.

You just better be glad that the tax is not based on a percentage of the base cost of gas per gallon. Imagine the cost of gas if it was.

BTW, I lived in Lousiana for 3 years. I know the roads suck there badly!
