ORGAN TRANSPLANT

SAUDI RECEIVER

Does anyone remember the story about the guy who woke up in a bathtub full of ice, a cell phone is his hand and a note to call 911 immediately? Urban legend, like the guy who woke up on a park bench to find that he has been organ napped. Everyone claimed these were stories, not true, that organ donations go the a whole screening process and the ones who are the sickest get priority, not matter who it is.

Well, that was proven wrong when baseball legend Mickey Mantel received a liver transplant after years of hard drinking. And during the surgery, they found out he had terminal cancer. So, instead of stopping the surgery and denying him the liver, he got the liver only to die a few months afterwards. Money talks when it comes to organ transplants. All the red tape and structure goes out the window when a hospital sees the green the person has.

Actually, the Feds looked into the Mickey Mantle issue and the liver was properly allocated....fyi.

it may have been properly allocated, but they should have used some moral judgement and decided that someone else would better benefit from it instead of Mickey Mantle.

your morals aren't my morals aren't someone else's morals. organs are donated based on condition of the patient. mantle may have abused his body in the past, but at the time of the transplant he had cleaned up and become a born-again christian. I'm clean but im not a christian, so his morals weren't my morals -- but that doesn't mean he didn't deserve the liver.
