ALITO

MODERATES

The GOP is hoping by turning to the moderates across the aisle, they will prevent a filibuster on the nomination of Alito. If a filibuster does happen, the republicans are threatening what they call the "Nuclear option" to break the filibuster.

Even before the last president election, both parties have been seeking a fight. There was a big hold up on lower court judges that have been waiting over a year to be voted on. With some concessions on Bush's part, those votes were finally made. Then came the two openings on the Supreme Court and the democrat's were licking the chops, hoping for a battle. But Bush's first nominee, Roberts, no one could find too much to fight about. He had a solid background and he was confirmed pretty quickly. Then with Harriet Miers, there were problems because she did not have a paper trail, anything that either party could really hang their hat on because she had never been a judge, just Bush's personal attorney. After a long fight to get papers on her work as White House Counsel, she finally withdrew her name. Now, determined to put another conservative on the bench, Bush nominates Alito who is definitely a strong conservative and it maybe the match that ignites the fire between the two parties.
