RELIGION IN AMERICA

mojoala said...

no, back when the constitution was being created there were only a handful of denominations compared to the hundreds we have now

Well, there were the Quakers, Calvinist, Lutheranism, Baptist, Methodist, Catholics,...
Not a lot of differences than there are today since most religions are well over 200 yrs old. And most knew that they could come to the newly formed United States and practice their religion withour persecution from their government. One thing I learned from reading this book about the writers of the Constitution, was that they almost didn't include the bill of rights. It was well after the final draft was submitted for ratification when the states themselves asked that the Bill or Rights be included.

And one is the freedom OF religion, not the freedom FROM religion. Religion has always been the back bone of this country, yet people want to do away with religion. And in a time of crisis, like now in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, its religion that gives us the strength to keep going. The mayor of New Orleans is estimating thousands dead in his city. We have to believe that there is some hope, some point to all this death and destruction.
